Nebraska and the Mormon Trail July 21, 2016

Today we continued westward. To determine the route we would take, we referred to some booklets that we were able to pick up at the Winter Quarters visitor center. They detail national historic trails across Nebraska. It has details about historic sites across the state, where to find them and what you will find there.

Based on what we read, we opted to travel on I-80 for most of the day.   It was basically a drive only day.  There is not much to tell about.

We decided to change where we were staying tonight, because we would have arrived at the hotel about 2:00 p.m and so we decided to travel further to Scottsbluff, and stay there. This will make our day of driving tomorrow a little shorter and even them out a bit.  One of the cool things about this is that we are now in the Mountain time zone!  Yay!  It makes us feel that much closer to home.

We are closer to home tonight, than we are when we are at Disneyland.  Our family and friends will understand why that is a good comparison for us.

We saw a few iconic sites on the way today. These were landmarks that helped the saints navigate and know where they were.  First we saw Frog's Head Bluff. The pioneers evidently thought it looked like the head of a frog.

We also saw the Courthouse and Jail Rocks.  They thought the large one looked like a courthouse, and the small one like a jail.

Then we saw Chimney Rock.  You may have seen pictures of some of these.  They were important landmarks for the pioneers.

On the way to the hotel, we saw three fields that Eeyore would have loved. They were filled with purple flowers (thistles in bloom).  Unfortunately, we didn't get pictures, but they were pretty if prickly.

Tomorrow we will visit Martin's Cove visitor center.  We will see what else time will allow.  Then we will be staying for our last night away from home in Casper, Wyoming.
